Summary

The game of chess very quickly instigated a love/hate relationship with the board game-playing community. There are players who find the game tedious, drawn out and uneventful, but there are also others who consider it a genius game of wits and tactics. For the latter, the PC Chessmaster series has been immensely popular, and Chessmaster 6000 is one of the series' best sellers, shifting over four million copies. Why? Read on...

Chessmaster 6000’s database contains an astonishing 300,000 game scenarios, meaning it is improbable that you’ll play any two games the same way. But Chessmaster 6000’s 'customisability' means players can import existing matches into the game. Online functionality means that rather than bringing your friends round for an extremely long session, you can play your game in your own time and send your moves online.

New or inexperienced players can relax in the knowledge that there’s an in-built tutorial. When playing, you can ask the computer questions, to which the game will demonstrate the answer. If mistakes are repeated in game, the computer will often intervene to instruct you on better courses of action. This is an invaluable asset to Chessmaster 6000, as beating computer AI in these games is notoriously difficult.

Veterans players can even challenge the Chessmaster himself in the most difficult game ever created for the series.

Several environment skins and a whole load of board designs and playing pieces gives Chessmaster plenty of variety, but to the hardcore fan, it’s the challenge of the game that counts.
