Summary
On the surface For Honor sounds like a no-brainer riff on the iconic Dynasty Warriors series - historical combat that pits knights against vikings against samurai.
And, yes, having vikings, knights and samurai slice each other up with swords is very cool. But boiling For Honor down into a third-person bash-'em-up ignores a lot of depth and strategy that goes beyond hair-trigger combat and over-powered action that characterises many brawlers.
For Honor, unusual among its triple-A peers, is about watching your enemy like a hawk, probing their defenses and watching for an opening that you can exploit to bloody your sword. Ubisoft's 'Art of Battle' combat system emphasises precision combat. Much as in Forza or Gran Turismo you'll really feel the weight and power of your vehicle, here you'll feel the capabilities of your sword and the way your chosen character can wield it.
The game comes, of course, with a single-player mode for you to sink your teeth into, but the multiplayer is arguably where it really shines. Communication and coordination with your fellow warriors is key to capturing control points and slaughtering your foes. You'll be able to see the influence of your chosen faction grow or shrink on a (cross-platform!) world map depending on your fortunes, so there's everything to fight for.
Ubisoft has even said that, much as with Rainbow Six Siege, future maps and modes will come as free updates, so the game will continue to evolve after you take it home.
