Summary
With three fully-fledged instalments and a broad range of expansion packs, the success of the Rainbow Six franchise speaks for itself. They are all faithful to the Tom Clancy novels, they all offer great visuals, and they all boast great squad-based gameplay. Rainbow Six 3 is the latest in the series to grace the PC platform with the releases of Athena Sword and Raven Shield. Again, both are massively popular, so much so in fact, that Ubi Soft has made the welcome move to package them together in a brand new Gold Edition box set.
Raven Shield
Once again, you have the opportunity to command an elite, multinational squad of special operatives against a hidden and sinister terrorist foe. In Raven Shield, RAINBOW races against time to stop terror and unravel a mystery in locations around the world, ranging from London, to the Caribbean, to Rio de Janeiro. Your job is to lead team RAINBOW in a desperate effort to bring down a madman and foil his doomsday plot.
Gameplay in Raven Shield largely remains the same as its predecessors, in which players must stealthily navigate an anti-terrorist squad through more than a dozen enemy-infested environments such as mansions and warehouses. There are 15 single-player stages in this offering, all built on the respectable Unreal engine and that play host to some 57 weapons and real-world accessories. It's an involving epic with a heavy focus on strategy, but the game's multi-player options are equally enticing.
Complete with online and network play, Raven Shield comes with six dedicated and brilliantly designed multi-player maps. Here, players can compete against other real-life foes on a one-to-one basis or as part of a team if they so choose. It's nothing new, but multi-player gaming is so much fun, particularly within the first-person genre, that little - if anything - needs to be changed.
Athena Sword
The game's story picks up where the original's left off, following the elite multinational squad of counter-terrorist operatives' successful defeat of a diabolical terrorist mastermind. Unfortunately the defeat wasn't all-encompassing, and a few strands of the organisation remain. And so you once again must join Team RAINBOW, this time as they track the terrorists into exotic regions of the Mediterranean, in order to prevent their agenda of international anarchy and devastation.
This new adventure results in a total of eight mission campaigns, which take you to such locations as Italy, Croatia and Greece. Helping you in each case throughout the intense combat is the addition of seven new real-world weapons - featuring sound effects from the team that worked on The Matrix - to make for a whopping 64 in total.
Obviously the multiplayer aspect is of equal importance in such games - Athena Sword doesn't disappoint, delivering plenty of new features for the LAN/Internet frag crew. There are three new multiplayer game modes - in the form of Adversarial Terrorist Hunt, Adversarial Scattered Hunt and Capture the Enemy - as well as five further locales that play host to the action, including Chemical Factory, Ferry Boat and Jungle.
