Summary

As we move into the new millennium, many genres in the industry are progressing at a previously unimaginable rate. Regarding the platform genre, the transition from 2D to 3D has proved to be the most radical change to date. However, there are some games that are simply better suited to the restraints of 2D platforming, often due to its target audience. Casper on the PSX is reasonable case in point.

Labelled as a pseudo 3D platform game, most of Casper’s gameplay entails the main character moving from left to right, avoiding anything hazardous along the way. Choose your skill level carefully, as Casper’s learning curve is surprisingly quite steep. Tricky areas of play are introduced as early as the second level. Special abilities allow for some variation throughout the game. You will initially have ability to duck, parachute and levitate, but as you progress, the opportunities to increase your strength and speed are unlocked. Your adventure will take you across eleven locations in all, all of which are considerably different from each other. Gameplay remains essentially the same throughout the game’s duration, and while this may not keep the attention of mature players for hours on end, children and fans of Casper will thoroughly enjoy Friends Around The World.
