Funcom is an independent developer and publisher of computer and console games with a focus on single-player adventure and role-playing games on multiple platforms, in addition to Persistent Online Worlds. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2003, Funcom continues to expand its track-record of more than 20 games to date. Recent successes include the multi-award winning The Longest Journey, and the award winning and acclaimed Anarchy Online.

Funcom formed in 1993 with five employees in Oslo. By the end of its first year, the company had expanded to 27 employees. By 1994, and now with 76 empoyees, the company delivered its first products, A Dinosaur's Tale and Dazer Before Christmas.

In 1995, Funcom opened a studio in Dublin which produced some notable titles in the console market during the last years of the 20th century.

During 1997/1998 the company moved into a more mature phase, and also began concentrating on the production of on-line games. By 1999 the company's on-line division had 100,000 members, and over 20,000 games of their backgamon product were played on-line per week.

2000 saw the on-line membership swell to 350,000 as the company put its Anarchy Online multi-player game into beta testing. Released in 2001, the game went on to win Best Multiplayer game at that year's European Computer Trade Show. At this time, the company took the decision to concentrate exclusively on on-line gaming, resulting in the closure of their division in Dublin.

Shadowlands, the first major expansion to Anarchy Online was released in 2003.
