Summary
Ash of Gods: Redemption is a strategic, turn-based RPG with roguelike storytelling and online an online PVP mode. Get all that? Don't worry, let us explain. We'll start with the obvious - Ash of Gods owes a lot to The Banner Saga, with its Dark Ages/medieval inspired setting, lush hand-animated art style and grid-based strategic combat elements. But The Banner Saga is very good, and Ash of Gods certainly does a fair amount to set itself apart, so that's certainly nothing to complain about.
The setting has more of a traditional dark fantasy vibe, with the world of Terminus under threat from an event called the reaping, and you must control three characters - a retired captain of the town guard, a healer and an assassin, each with their own party, as they set forth to combat the threat. Decisions you make along the road will have serious repercussions for the story, and as in the real world their effects won't necessarily be immediately apparant.
When it comes to combat, the system is turn-based across a grid, but with an interesting twist. There's a card-based element, with the hand you're dealt affecting the conditions and options of your battle.
All that said, with the heavy emphasis on narrative here, AurumDust has opted to include a mode that has the AI take over combat for you. So, if you just want to dive into the story and world without messing about with swords, you can hand over your fighting duties to and settle in for the narrative ride.
On the visuals front, the studio counts Ralph Bakshi, old-school Disney cartoons and the 1960s Soviet animation studio Soyuzmultfilm among the influences on Ash of Gods' art style, and in the case of the combat scenes they've combined it with motion capture of real actors. The effect is smooth and rich - Ash of Gods is a real treat for the eyeballs.
