Summary

The galactic empire has fallen, but from its ashes you have the opportunity to build a new civilisation and a bright new future for your people. Of course, you won't be the only one looking for a bright new future. Will yours be the one to prevail?

Age of Wonders: Planetfall puts a big new twist on the venerable Age of Wonders turn-based 4X strategy series. Gone are the fantasy trappings of earlier entries in the series, with the franchise having now taken to the stars to throw up new challenges.

At its heart, though, are many of the same elements that fans of the series love - building settlements; researching new technologies; managing production; engaging in diplomacy with other civilisations and, if that fails, resorting to a hail of plasma fire and acid grenades on the battlefield.

The SF spin on the formula has given developer Triumph Studios license to build a big, deep new world filled with dinosaur-riding Amazons and cyborg-zombies. It has also, however, given them the opportunity to interrogate some of the stereotypes often found in science fiction and fantasy games and beg new questions. What does it mean, for example, for a very American-looking faction to be cast as an army with no nation left to defend?

Beneath all that, of course, is a deep civilisation-building and combat strategy game with plenty to offer fans of the series new and old, as well as the opportunity to take on your friends in multiplayer.
