Summary

Tetris might well be the most ported and reimagined game of all time, and yet at it's core it remains the same. A series of different-shaped blocks cascade down your screen and it's your job to arrange them in such away that lines form and disappear, stopping your screen from filling up. It's such a simple, elegant and addictive gameplay loop that it bears very little tinkering with, so can anything new be done with the formula? The surprising answer is 'yes'.

The people behind the likes of Rez Infinite and Lumines (most notably gaming legend Tetsuya Mizuguchi) have reinvented the game with a series of beautiful visual and aural effects that transform the experience that many people first came to love in monochrome on the Game Boy. The backgrounds pulse, shimmer, dance and erupt in sync with how you're playing, whether you're watching a whale made of light swim around your screen or drifting through an enchanted forest.

The core of the game is Journey, a mode that takes you on a tour of the strange new levels the development team have created, but it's accompanied by a wealth of other modes that offer interesting twists on Tetris's gameplay like inverting the screen or making you clear a level with a fixed number of stacks.

Strangely enough, you can teach an old block new tricks.
