Summary

We've all dreamed of being the Chosen One, the fated hero in a magical land protected by the gods and worshiped by those you've saved. But what about the guys on the sidelines. What if you weren't Aragorn, or even Frodo, but one of those riders at the back of the pack in Rohan, or one of the terrified townspeople in Lake-town? And what if there were still a great task to undertake? That's the question Outward asks. The answer is a game that sits somewhere at the junction between Skyrim and DayZ - a high fantasy RPG with a strong emphasis on survival mechanics.

So, yes, there's a pretty good chance you'll find yourself fighting a giant crab or dodging lightning spells at some point. You'll also need to make sure that you drink enough and catch 40 winks every now and then, though. You absolutely want armour for some of the encounters with magical beasts you'll run into, but make sure you remember to take it off before you head into the desert. This is a game that makes the trials, tribulations and consequences of living in a fantasy land all too real.

In this context, things such as upgrading from a satchel to a backpack that would barely register as achievements in other games become huge victories, and casting a simple fireball spell requires acquiring numerous pieces of magic and equipment. It makes life harder, but all the more rewarding.

Do you think you could hack it as an average Joe in a world of heroes and magic? Time to find out.
