Summary
Making a game to commemorate the centenary of World War One is a bold move. Video games traditionally treat war as a reliable source of explosions and adrenaline-pumping action. They're not exactly known for their sensitive touch. Fortunately Aardman Animations isn't any old studio. In 11-11: Memories Retold the creators of Wallace and Gromit have created an interactive experience that attempts to deal with the punishing realities of war in a way will bring them to life for generations a long way removed from the horrors of the trenches.
The game follows a Canadian called Harry and a German called Kurt, each trying to survive on an opposite side of the war. When the game starts Harry is working in a Toronto photography shop and Kurt in a German zeppelin factory, but events conspire to bring them both into the war and, over the course of months, their stories begin to intertwine.
Although there are some stealth sections and moments where you'll have to run for your like, this isn't an action game. You don't carry a gun and you're not called on to blow things up. It's much slower and more contemplative, with a strong focus on story and the emotional currents that run beneath the surface of war. It's portrayed in a striking impressionistic style reminiscent of the likes of Turner and Monet that heightens the sense you're playing through something quite unlike the latest Battlefield or Call of Duty game.
