Summary

It looked, for a while, like The Last Guardian might never grace our screens. Announced, delayed, partially glimpsed, moved from one platform to another... The deliriously anticipated follow-up to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus from Team ICO seemed like it would never arrive. But here it is.

The game starts with you, a small and vulnerable boy, unshackling a monster that's part cat, part pigeon, part who-knows-what, while trying not to get hurt by this scared creature. While it might initially be a danger, however, it will reward you a thousand times over for this act of kindness through the course of the game. It's this relationship with the creature that forms the core of The Last Guardian as you explore and escape a vast citadel from a failed civilisation.

There are puzzles, there's lots of environment traversal, and there's combat of a sort. But the heart of the game is interacting with your companion. You're intensely vulnerable and you must coax this creature into keeping you safe and helping you through the perilous environment. If you read and treat it right, it will defend you from enemies, carry you across tricky terrain and generally keep you alive as you make your way through the world.

Putting this bond at the heart of The Last Guardian is a unique and intriguing move, and one that is sure to fascinate PlayStation 4 owners.
