Summary

Tower defence games offer a nice spread of gameplay. Found less frequently in the world of console gaming than they are on the PC and tablets, they see players fortifying a base against inbound hordes of enemies, while often manning their own defences to keep the foes at bay. It's a blend of strategy knife-edge reaction that suits a range of players.

Into the genre comes Aegis Of Earth: Protonovus Assault. The set-up will likely feel familiar to fans of animes such as Neon Genesis Evangelion - we're on a post-apocalyptic Earth lousey with monsters, and a few humans desperately clinging on for dear life in a few hold-out cities. The cities tend to take the form of concentric rings, offering a nearly blank canvas on which players can arrange gatling cannons, missile launchers and laser turrets (there are 50 different unit types in all) amid the residential areas and shopping malls the people need to survive.

The story keeps things moving, with players visiting different areas to fortify their defences and strengthen their cities. You can also recruit and level up supporting characters to man your control room, meaning you don't have to go up against the enemy alone!
