Summary

Telltale games has, for a little while at least, left behind the grim worlds of the likes of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Fables to play in the altogether more fun world of Minecraft. Teaming up with Minecraft developer Mojang, the studio has brought a new adventure to the free-roaming, free-building series.

Players control Jesse (voiced by either Patton Oswalt or Catherine Taber, depending on what gender you choose) as he delves into the world of Minecraft with his friends Axel, Olivia, Petra, Lukas and his pet pig, Reuben. There's an evil beast tearing things up and our heroes decide that the best way to remedy this is to uncover the secrets of the Order of the Stone, a legendary guild that once saved the world.

While the game features the rich storytelling that Telltale is known for, the involvement of Mojang gives it all an authentic Minecraft feel. Of course, there are the immediately recognisable block graphics, but the really juicy stuff is in the references to Minecraft's mechanics. To progress, players have to use a crafting table to build things in order to progress. Using recipes that actually come from Minecraft, players craft the items they need to get out of scrapes. Care has been taken to strike a balance between servicing the hardcore fans and those a little newer to Minecraft. While there are some deep references scattered through the game, there are plenty of easily-followed moments to explain the world.

With the retail version, players get the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode on their disc and then access to the remaining four episodes digitally as they're released.
