Summary

At this point in time, Mario and Sonic at the 'insert city name here' Olympic Games is practically the official game of the Games, so it won't surprise anyone to see this latest entry gracing their screens to celebrate Rio 2016.

There are 14 Olympic disciplines packed into the game, plus a host of sports that put a distinctive Mario and Sonic twist on Olympic events. That includes golf, which for the first time in the 112 year history of the Olympics is an official event, and players can swing their clubs using the stylus in a 3DS exclusive. Alternatively, less traditional events include the chance to dive through and ride waves caused by a Thwomp in the 100m Freestyle Swimming Plus or a foot race riddled with power-ups in the 100m Plus Event.

The action is played out using a host of familiar faces from the Mario and Sonic franchises, from mainstays such as Yoshi and Amy Rose to 20 faces new to the series such as Rosalina and Rouge, bringing the total number of playable characters up to 40!

For those who want to taste the glory themselves, there's the Road to Rio mode. Players arrive in Rio as their Mii and discover an ongoing rivalry between two gyms, led by Sonic and Mario respectively. Players decide which side to choose, unlocking unique story events along the way.

Or, for those who like to get up close and competitive, there's 3DS download play for up to four or global leaderboards for players to climb!
