Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a “first person slasher” aka a Hack'n'Slash in Beat-'em'-Up form for lovers of history and fighting.

The game draws – as its name suggests - on medieval period battles. This includes such bloody delights as online army battles in which one side protects its beleaguered castle from siege.

If the idea of long-term, strategic attack and defence is less appealing than full-blooded, sprint-standard battle then the gamer can take part in raiding medieval villages or even in fighting for life or death in arena. Using a deep melee combat system from Torn Banner Studio, players can manipulate their swings in real time with the mouse for highly targeted and controlled attack. They can also deploy defensive blows using a large collection of medieval weaponry including swords, battle axes, longbows, flails and mighty warhammers.

These all make use of the “Freeform Combination System” that allows players to chain attacks and blocks together, accelerating the pace of combat.

It's not all grunt and grind though because the Dynamic Objective System enables the gamer to make use of team tactics and strategies to help them to batter down gates, scale siege towers and assassinate enemy royalty. Also added to the fray are catapults, boiling oil and, of course, the terrifyingly efficient broadsword.

The game has a host of unlockable items that can be used to customise the player's chosen warrior, who will be drawn from one of four unique classes: Archer, Man-at-arms, Vanguard or Knight, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

The whole experience is available to play in single or multiplayer modes, combined with ‘quickfix’ minigames as well as more strategic and objective-oriented gameplay styles.
