Summary

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition brings two of the all time, solid gold, locked on gaming classics back in a big way: The Secret of Monkey Island and also Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

The Secret of Monkey Island set the gold standard for quirky humour, mind-stretching puzzles, fabulously piratical characters and graphics that – in 1990 – were considered pretty great.

Time has moved on, and with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, so have the graphics. These have been lovingly re-produced and then started again but this time using the full scope of modern high definition rendering. In short, all-new, all HD.

While back in 1990, the musical score of the LucasArts game was considered more than a bit adequate, it wouldn’t cut the mustard today, so that too has been re-recorded and remastered. (For older players, however, the new, HD, remastered version can be switched back to the original, old versions at any time).

Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge not only ups the sounds and graphics it also, via direct-control, enables players to control much loved hero (and idiot) Guybrush Threepwood if they want to.

With a new hint system that highlights objects of interest while playing, the game can also be played by newcomers.

For old timers and newcomers alike there is also in-game audio commentary from the game’s original creators Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. This commentary is part of the all new features in the collection that includes environment and character concept art and storyboards – as well as insights and artwork from the unreleased Industrial Light & Magic Monkey Island animated movie.
