Summary

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified went through a lot of iterations to get to your screen in its final form. Spun off from the original strategy combat XCOM games, The Bureau started life as an FPS. Determined to get closer to the series' roots, however, 2K Marin tweaked the game to make it a third-person game with a stronger tactical element.

Still set in the 1960s, the player steps into the shoes of William Carter, an agency man who works for the newly-formed Bureau of Strategic Emergency Command. The covert agency was intended to deal with the Soviets, but the agency finds itself to deal with the completely unexpected - a chaotic alien invasion! Not only do they need to repel it, they have to keep it secret to stop the panic from spreading.

Whereas Firaxis’ Enemy Unknown sat you above the action and let you play with your squad in a strategy sim fashion, here you get to directly control Carter on the front lines. Pressing the B button will slow down the TPS action and allow you to command two squaddies - be it directing them to cover, launching special equipment to offer cover to yourself and others, or simply mowing down aliens.

The game also embraces proper, real death. If a squadmate goes down and Carter fails to reach them in time to revive them, they stay dead. Uh-oh!
