Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines helped to simplify the ever-complex RTS genre while simultaneously giving players a challenging and enthralling experience. The manual was thin, but the gameplay was dense, in the nicest sense.

Commandos is set in World War 2 and places you, the player, in control of a small league of experienced troops. Your task is to aid your allies in this dreadful war and get your squad back in one piece.

Players must formulate impeccable strategies and study the enemy to execute a successful mission. The game comprises of dozens of levels that offer a unique but equally challenging experience to the player. Some stages involve infiltration, while others entail the player participating in an all out shoot-em-up.

Moving on to Commandos 2, the game once again plunges you into an intense war. From the deepest bunkers of Colditz castle to the bulkhead of an aircraft carrier, Commandos 2 boasts a revised gameplay strategy while simultaneously retaining the planning and investigation aspects that made the original so popular. Also, the pace of play has been increased and now includes ambushes and shoot-outs. Although not produced in 3D, the pre-rendered backdrops seen in Commandos 2 are stunning, varied, and are of an extremely high level of detail.

The most significant improvements in gameplay can be found in the characters themselves. Players are now able to carry and exchange objects and weapons, but the unique character abilities remain intact, enabling the player to make informed decisions on who does what in a mission. There is also a new selection of vehicles to choose from that include tanks and trucks, and new weapons, such as bazookas and flame-throwers.

The third instalment of the much-loved RTS series saw a graphical overhaul and revamped gameplay, as well as an assortment of new single and multiplayer features.

Destination Berlin's main game is made up of three campaigns: Stalingrad, Central Europe and Normandy. Each of the campaigns encompasses many different tactical situations that can be played in any order, and features scenarios unseen in previous Commandos games. Throughout the game, the action takes you to the Stalingrad battlefields of the Eastern Front, the heart of the Reich in the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin and the D-Day assault at Omaha Beach.

New to the series is a re-written interior game engine that enables you to rotate the detailed environments and also to zoom in and out. The structure of the game has also been completely revamped, featuring more detailed and smaller maps, which subsequently make for more action orientated missions. With regard to the combat itself, Commandos 3 incorporates an assortment of new gaming situations including ambushes, assaults and level bosses.

One of the more favourable elements to a game such as this is the multiplayer support - Commandos 3 doesn't disappoint, offering a host of game modes for up to eight players across the net or over a LAN. For the first time in the series there's now the option of a deathmatch mode, which makes for some truly epic battles.

Commandos Strike Force took a new direction for the multi-million selling Commandos series. In this game, you play in a first-person perspective, as you shoot, sneak and snipe your way across a wartorn Europe amid the realistic backdrop of World War II.

You have to take your elite Strike Force unit behind enemy lines on a series of linked missions through France, Russia and Norway. Your overall objective is to pave the way for invasion and you do this through undertaking action, infiltration and stealth missions with the Green Berets, Sniper and Spy – and you can switch between these characters on-the-fly in many of the missions.
