Summary

While browsing through your local bookshop, you might have come across a little series called Horrible Histories. It's the world's best-selling history series for children – a feat achieved by focusing on some of the grimmer moments in history and treating them with a spot of irreverent humour. Horrible Histories: Ruthless Romans marks the first game to spin out of the partnership between Slitherine and the series' book publisher, Scholastic.

The game revolves around Rassimus, a young fellow who's been raised by the great gladiator trainer Lucius Gladius and spent some 12 years in his service. Now, finally, Rassimus is ready to begin his gladiatorial training so that he can fight in the Colosseum and – fingers crossed – ultimately earn his freedom.

Gameplay takes the form of a series of mini-games that will see players doing everything from shooting rats and slapping folk about in the baths as they gain the kit they'll need to become a citizen of Rome.

Because the game is educational, it's evident that a lot of effort has gone into accurately recreating the historical Rome, meaning players can learn while they play. Furthering the learning experience, the in-game tutorial and diary will serve up helpful information about this fascinating period in history.
