Summary

Back in 1986 a little comics series going be the name of Watchmen, by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, made its way into the world. It can be safely said that it changed the landscape of comics forever with its gritty, psychological, real world take on superheroes. 23 years later, after a fair amount of time in development limbo, that tale hit cinemas. Warner Bros., the owner of the property, was never going to let that pass without a game hitting your console. Having first hit the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live as a couple of downloadable episodes, Watchmen: The End is Nigh has been packaged into a handy retail release.

The game takes place in the days before the events of the film and comics. It stars Nite Owl and Rorschach who, while in the midst of a debate over recent political events, hear talk of a riot at Sing Sing Prison over the police radio. As they arrive on the scene they discover that the villain known as Underboss has escaped the jail and it's up to them to quell the riot and hit the streets of New York to bring him to justice.

The game is a dark, third-person brawler with an emphasis on teamwork. Players can take control of either of the heroes, making use of their unique abilities to dole out justice. They're not your typical abilities. You won't find either character popping claws from their fists or unleashing laser beams from their eyes. What you will find is Nite Owl making use of an arsenal of tricky gadgets, such as an electrified suit and a grappling gun, while Rorschach has a down and dirty fighting style and uncanny agility.

Teamwork's the order of the day, and you'll have to lean on either the smart AI or a friend in split-screen co-op to win the day.

If you're looking for a tough, visceral superhero game that eschews the fantastic elements of other titles for a gritty take on the beat-'em-up genre, this is for you.
