Summary

Considering no zero gravity racing vehicles exist on earth, there are a surprising amount of video games featuring them. Is it because, midway into the life of the racing game, simulating the feel of tyres gripping road was problematic? Or is it just because the idea of a hover space racer is really cool?

Whatever the reasons, F-Zero, Wipeout and the Star Wars Pod Racing game all captured the imagination of generations, but it’s a fact not widely known that the 1988 game Powerdrome is regarded as the forerunner of this style of game. Now a no-nonsense reprise to the game that started it all comes to the PC, also called Powerdrome, and brought to you by Zoo Digital. Dispensing with weaponry and other gimmicks, the game is focused on providing a high performance derived sensation of speed, coupled with subtle and rewarding handling.

Set on the supersonic Powerdrome racetrack, competitions are held which attracts drivers from all over the galaxy who come to prove themselves. Choose one of twelve drivers and risk his life pushing your craft to unbelievable speeds made all the more exciting by a high frame rate. Competent sound and visuals complete the experience, with the roar of jet engines and sophisticated lighting effects adding to the sensory bombardment.

Feel the jet engines of your high powered craft pull you at beyond breakneck speeds round 24 eye candy rich tracks. The game is developed by London-based Argonaut studios, and as you’d imagine for a PC game boasts online play. Up to 8 players can play online or over LAN, and the facility is provided for racers to set up their own races and tournaments. It’s about time that fantasy racing games got this kind of makeover.
