Summary

The Volkswagen peoples’ car, commonly known a Beetle, is officially the cutest car ever conceived by a Fascist dictator. Well-loved and widely used to this day (the cars are still manufactured in Mexico due to their simple design and hardworking nature), the popularity of the VW both as a cheap runaround and car-modder’s favourite can be attributed to three factors: surf culture, the fact that Porsche engines will go straight in, and the Herbie films of the 70s and early 80s. Enshrined in the Pantheon of memorable Disney characters, the loveable car, known also as The Love Bug, Ocho, or number 53, has starred in at least four films to date. This summer sees the long overdue release of a new instalment, Herbie: Fully Loaded, starring flavour of the month Lindsay Lohan as the latest in a long line of the enchanted car’s keepers. Owners of this modest Beetle have traditionally been ambitious to the point of delusion, and Lohan is no different, nursing a desire to compete in NASCAR of all things, in her little tin can.

The film’s release is commemorated by Disney’s interactive entertainment branch, Buena Vista Games, with this game on GBA, also called Herbie: Fully Loaded. As you’d expect, the game pitches itself firmly in the fun racing genre, and you’ll get to drive the mighty little car round a variety of circuits, avoiding hazards and collecting power-ups as you race wheel to wheel with AI cars. Story mode allows you to retread the film’s narrative, with assets from the film – pictures of Lindsay Lohan and Herbie – offered as treats to keep you going. A replay feature will allow you to practice the courses that you’re having trouble with, and Herbie will also surprise you with a selection of suitably crazy special moves. An in game meter shows you the little fellow’s mood, which naturally will vary according to how well you do.

It’s good to see that Herbie does indeed Ride Again. And though you won’t be going to Monte Carlo this time, there’s no doubt that you’ll Go Bananas and fall in Love with this Bug.
