Summary

Ang Lee’s Hulk film lent a more thoughtful air to the recent flurry of Marvel Comics movie adaptations. The franchise could easily have become a rambunctious, SFX heavy romp, but the director chose a more psychological angle, probing the darkest recesses on Dr. Bruce Banner’s mind for much of the film. And so it was with the film’s inevitable accompanying videogame. Sneaking around as Banner, the aim was often to avoid transforming into the Hulk for as long as possible to avoid jeopardising your mission as you search for a cure. And we liked it quite a lot.

Now the Hulk returns to consoles in The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. We pick up the story and Bruce finally has a much-longed for cure to his condition in his sights, and has constructed a machine in his forest hideout that may be able to help him. But the US government will stop at nothing in their misguided attempts to destroy the Hulk. In an attack on his lair, the machine is destroyed. It’s lucky for Bruce that he’s not alone – his friend, the psychotherapist has been helping him to control his disorder, but now is the time to unleash the beast within. By undergoing hypnosis Bruce is able to summon the Hulk from within him at will – the great green one’s strength is his only hope if his wishes to gather the components he needs to rebuild his invention.

As in the last game the Hulk’s powers are beyond your wildest dreams. Pick up bits of the scenery and chuck them at your enemies as you roam freely through the game’s 30 missions. 40 side challenges and over 150 attacks and combos ensure that this will take plenty of time to master. Face arch-enemies from the comic books such as the Abomination, Mercy and the Hulk-Busters as they stand between you and a normal, mutation free life. But just for the meantime, even if for the last time, enjoy it.
