Summary

Despite being an adventure that is so obviously inspired by Grand Theft Auto, Payback developer Apex simply wanted make a 'crime-em-up' of its own that delivered the same controversial gameplay seen in Rockstar's defining series. And that's just what Payback is all about.

Thrown in at the deep end, players are dumped into a world of crime that, from the outset, sees them acquiring and fulfilling a series of highly illegal missions via a number of scattered phone booths. Sound familiar? Tasks encompass collect and delivery errands, street races and even killing off members of the local mafia, the KKK. And while much of the game entails driving vehicles around a maze-like city, there are times when you'll have to abandon your motor in favour of a little on-foot action. Eventually you'll find yourself engaged in gun fights, and you'll even have the ability to lob a grenade or two.

On the face of it, Payback is a distinctly linear game, but there is also the option to throw caution to the wind and roam the cities freely, wreaking havoc however you wish. It's not integral to the game, but it's great fun. Just be careful you don't get shot down amidst your own rampage.

There are several cities available to the player, which can be accessed through a given number of successful missions on earlier cities. Each is played in the familiar top-down perspective, and is unarguably one of the best-looking GBA titles to date, rendered in full 3D with a fully rotating camera.

There's lots to do in the single-player game, and with a 4-player Deathmatch mode also available, Payback is by no means a dull adventure.
