Summary

Ever wanted to build your own ship and lead it into war, but couldn’t because you were a few million quid short? Well Koei has the answer with Naval Ops for PlayStation 2, giving players the opportunity to do just that, only in the virtual world, and at a fraction of the price!

Naval Ops plays host to two very different playing styles - strategy and battle. The strategy section of the game is where players will custom design and build their own warship. You are free to choose from a variety of parts and weapons, but your design must be appropriate to the following mission if you are to succeed. Design smart - that’s the most important thing.

The battle aspect of fighting is where the game comes into its own, whereby players’ designs will be tested in real-time combat against several formidable enemies. Completing a mission and its objectives will allow players to “retrieve” new items, which can then be used to outfit your winning ship with upgrades.

Combat can at times be complicated, but there are three obvious, yet important rules to follow. Choose your weapons carefully, never lose sight of the enemy, and protect your ship from enemy fire. It does take some practice to get used to, but the in-game tutorials prove extremely useful.

Battle game modes include Survival Mode, in which your ship is subject to extreme fire, and World War II Mode, designed for enthusiasts looking for a realistic and immersive challenge. Naval Ops isn’t the type of game we’ve come to expect from Koei, but it's a pleasant surprise nonetheless.
