Summary

Perhaps with the exception of EA's NBA Live series, Acclaim's NBA Jam is the biggest basketball series in the world of video games, going all the way back to the 16-bit era on SNES and MegaDrive. It was famed for being an outrageous basketball game, boasting players with almost superhero-like abilities. The series is still going strong in 2003, and Acclaim has unleashed the next in the series, built from the ground up, for PlayStation 2.

Putting aside super-human powers for a moment, it's worth mentioning that NBA Jam is one of the most in-depth basketball games we've come across. It sets players not just in a game of modern day basketball, but in historic basketball as well, spanning more than 50 years of tickling the twine. NBA Jam features legends such as Magic Johnson, Julius Irving and Larry Bird, and comes complete with era-specific uniforms and hairstyles.

NBA Jam is a game where you'll be able to jump higher than humanly possible and shoot flaming basketballs through hoops. The laws of physics don't always apply here - you need to forget about them and take leaps of faith to claim victory. It's still a superbly executed basketball game, but it's lighthearted and a lot of fun. Exhibition and Tournament modes as well as a series of mini games help to make the Jam experience more extensive, and it's a game that will keep players coming back for more.

NBA Jam is visually impressive too, with solid environments, brilliantly animated players, and some spectacular effects.
