Summary

If you're a fan of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, et al, then you might want to make a note of this latest title from Sony's Studio Cambridge. Without as much of the blood and gore of those games however, Ghosthunter instead focuses more on the spiritual side of things, involving, amongst other things, the pursuit and capture of ghosts. Think Ghostbusters but with just the one guy, slightly spookier, and less goofy.

The concept of Ghosthunter is based on the existence of supernatural forces, and how the world is full of the spiritual remnants of every creature killed before its time. Some of these degenerate into monstrous creatures, while others exist for centuries, increasing in power and retaining a human mind. In Ghosthunter, a number of these creatures have formed what's known as 'The Parliament of Spooks' and their sole aim is to steal back life from the living.

You take on the role of new cop on the block, Lazarus Jones who, on a routine patrol with partner Anna Steel, unwittingly unearths some professor's supernatural research centre and subsequently unleashes the ghosts into the world. When Anna is abducted by one of the ghosts, Lazarus embarks on the quest to clean up the chaos and find the professor.

And so the adventure begins in true survival horror style, with you searching the derelict building amidst a host of atmospheric visuals and chilling sound effects. Along the way, the general task at hand is to put those ghosts out of their misery, which you can achieve by taking advantage of a wealth of both traditional and original weaponry. Obviously, being a cop, you've got your trusty pistol, but we all know they're not massively effective against spirits. Luckily, you also acquire access to other bits of kit throughout the game, such as a Spectral Lasso, for draining ghostly energy, a Pulse Rifle that runs off spectral energy, and a weapon developed by the military called a 'Techno Gun'.

As your adventure progresses, you soon find yourself caught up in a mysterious conspiracy that appears to be connected to a spate of recent disappearances. Consequently, the search for the professor takes you to a wide variety of locations around the world, where you end up encountering everything from World War II soldiers to ghostly prison guards and the lost souls of murdered children.
