Summary

The point-and-click adventure is a genre that is on a downward spiral in the world of video games. Such releases rarely get the attention they deserve and some say they are too few and far between. Regardless, many of them are pretty good games, and the next one to make an appearance is Mindscape's Cypher: Code of Ruin for PC.

In a James Bond-meets-Indiana Jones affair, players are charged with the epic task of infiltrating a secret base in an effort to stop a deadly virus from wreaking havoc on Earth. All you have to do is plant a device to help allied forces pinpoint the location of the virus and its villainous owners. But there's a lot more to getting into a highly guarded secret base than you might imagine...

It will become quickly apparent that your best course of action is to enter a neighbouring ancient pyramid in order to find a hidden entrance. And it's here where your adventure begins proper. Using a keyboard to make decisions and a mouse for camera control, you'll roam the game's 3D environments in an effort to gain clues and items to help your progress. Most rooms play host to simple puzzles that must be completed in exchange for such items. But what makes Cypher more of a challenge is the fact that a puzzle completed incorrectly often results in certain death. The best course of action is to save frequently to avoid losing progress.

And that's the essence of game. It's a thoroughbred point-and-click game that fans of the genre will most likely play and enjoy.
