Summary

The last time we got to kick some tightly-clad bottom in a snowboarding style, we were hooked on SSX Tricky and its moody, mouthy, arm-swinging inhabitants' love of smacking one another upside the head. Equally, the only time we've been drawn to the potential mysteries of the snowy slopes was when Dark Summit appeared in 2002, replete with its shady characters and mission-based storyline. Konami's Evolution Snowboarding combines elements of the two aforementioned games, in that there's plenty of no frills, slope-set combat action along with the bigger picture - saving the world, mountain by mountain.

Evolution Snowboarding features a selection of 10 real-life riders, including Todd Richards and 2002 Winter Olympic silver medal winner Danny Klass, and a veritable trove of the very best in snowboarding equipment and clothing to help things along. Once gamers have chosen a boarder and kitted them out in the best gear, there's nowhere to go but the slopes. Verily, it is time to shred!

Evolution Snowboarding for GameCube, in common with EA's SSX Tricky, features some unlikely locations for riding the flakes. Chinatown, for example, is somewhere you couldn't possibly expect to board in real life, but it all adds to the excitement, what with all the natural obstacles and the regular hustle and bustle on the streets. Exciting? Oh yes. Challenging? You'd better believe it!

Chinatown is but one of eight locations to conquer in Evolution Snowboarding. As well as taking back the mountains by beating all-comers, there is the chance to pick up better, stronger equipment as you progress through the levels. The tougher the challenge becomes, the more sophisticated the gear you'll need, and you have to earn it through a combination of guile and, well, taking no bull from the opposition while you're out on the slopes.

With a control system that's as intuitive as you could wish for regarding a game of this nature, i.e. where taking a swing and kicking out at the opposition is integral to the game, Evolution Snowboarding's timing is odd. Just when we're beginning to forget the cold of winter as we are enveloped in the kinder climes of springtime - in Europe at least - snowboarding really should be the last thing on our minds. But Konami are here to give us the chills - and no little thrills - as Evolution Snowboarding urges you to strap it on once again. Feel the cold!
