Summary

Specialist developer Papyrus has been the company behind several of Vivendi's most successful Nascar games. With each game produced, the visuals become more impressive, handling is refined, and the all-round playing experience is improved. The same is true of Papyrus' latest 2003 effort, Nascar Racing 2003 Season for PC.

Playing host to all 23 circuits from the Nascar league including the New Hampshire International Speedway and the infamous Infineon Raceway, Nascar Racing 2003 gives you the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 200mph racer in a truly chaotic tournament. Each car handles slightly different to the next and you must learn the fundamental elements of racing to cross the finish in a top position. Racing lines are important, as are power and gears, and with some brilliantly programmed cars and AI routines chasing you, you'll be kept on your toes non-stop.

Thankfully there is a series of driving and racing tutorials to help players learn the ins and outs of high speed racing, but we strongly recommend you get yourself a reasonable controller, or ideally, a steering wheel to immerse yourself fully in the Nascar game world.

The authenticity of Nascar Racing 2003 is greatly improved by a respectable game engine and some admirable visuals and special effects. Gradual dirt and oil accumulation on the windscreen is particularly convincing, and sun glare forces the driver to cope with difficult racing conditions.

So is it the best in the series? Quite possibly - you'll have to play to find out.
