Summary

The Second World War is such an extensive subject that in video games it doesn't matter how many times developers produce RTS games and FPS games based upon it, there's always room for one more. The latest in the ongoing line up of WWII strategy games is Mindscape's GI Combat: Battle of Normandy.

Pitting players against enemy forces in an online-capable battle for domination and survival, G.I Combat's dozens of hypothetical and historical scenarios cover actual events from the war such as D-Day, and adds several imaginative battles of its own.

Regardless of the situation, a battle is a battle. Gaming locales are expectedly gloomy and muddy and are littered with the usual plethora of allied and enemy units, including troops, tanks and any other technical fighting machines you can think of.

When it comes to gameplay, your challenge will be to command a team of troops on the battlefield and eliminate the oncoming enemy. It's a deceptively simple concept, but facing an enemy that is just as well equipped to wage war as you are is where the challenge comes in. Battling some clever computer opponents, you'll need outsmart the enemy in what is, on the face of it, a giant game of chess. Strategy is of the utmost importance, we can't stress that enough. Lose your objectivity and you lose the battle, perhaps even the war.

And that's just the single player mode. Multi-player gaming can be much more fun and unpredictable and adds a great sense of competition to the game. What's more, you can make great use of a powerful mission editor that allows you to edit existing missions or create completely new ones, making for great replay value.

G.I Combat Episode 1 is a polished WWII simulator with a competitive streak. Hopefully, Episode 2 is right around the corner.
