Summary

Frogger, one of the most memorable names in video game history, has been hopping on logs and crossing rivers since Konami first introduced him in 1981. Some 22 years later, the loveable amphibian is still making waves on GameCube in his latest offering, Frogger Beyond.

Eager to become a respected member of the community, Frogger has been charged with undertaking a series of ever more hazardous missions on behalf of his swamp's Elder Council. As he strives to prove his worth to the local population, Frogger must explore a series of danger-filled environments as each of the eight Elders sends him on a mission to a themed game world.

It's an obligatory storyline that serves as nothing more than an excuse to showcase Frogger in environments such as volcanoes, space stations and snowy mountains, but that doesn't detract from the classic Frogger gameplay seen in Frogger Beyond. Yes, fundamentally, you'll spend the majority of your time moving from one area of the game to the next whilst avoiding oncoming obstacles and traps.

But of course, to keep the unstoppable frog up to date, Konami has added a few gameplay traits to the series to make matters more competitive and more interesting. Revised level design and innovation means Frogger now has special abilities to enhance his performance. Collecting the correct power ups, Frogger can now move quicker, eat his adversaries, and even become invisible for short periods of time. There's also a scattering of collectibles and bonuses hidden within each of the levels to hunt down.

Gameplay is still viewed form a top-down perspective, and the platform-based nature of the game remains intact. Frogger Beyond is a fine addition to Konami's veteran platform series and we look forward to more amphibious ventures in the future.
