Summary

Not, as you may imagine, a game based on Tolstoy's epic panoramic study of early 19th-century Russian society, War and Peace on the PC is actually a historical real-time strategy game. It does, however, seem to borrow from the book in terms of size - this game is on quite a grand scale.

War and Peace challenges players to become the ruler of their nation and carve their name in history. An intense strategical element sees players in charge of all aspects of their nations, including politics, economy, diplomacy, army, and tactics, as they get to experience being a major statesman at the dawn of the 19th century.

With regard to the scale of the game, a unique single 3D map of the entire world is at the core of the proceedings, featuring 179 modelled cities, across which players lead thousands of soldiers into battle. There are six playable nations from the particular era to choose from, each with their own dedicated units, troops, generals, and cities.

Managing highly advanced tactics, players control their country's policies, but careful decisions must be made, as each choice will have an impact on the relevant economies and states. Victory can be achieved through good relationships with opponents and allies, but alternative strategies can also be effective, such as using spies to wage secret wars.

A strategy game set across a map of the entire world, this makes for some extensive gameplay. Make sure you have the time.
