Summary

Having marked its military-orientated territory with the highly-acclaimed tank sim Panzer Elite, German-based developer Wings now brings us its latest offering, Soldner: Secret Wars. Treading a similar path, the game focuses on the tactical side of military action, with an emphasis on realism, but on a much larger scale and with a wider variety of combat scenarios.

The scene is set in the year 2010. After more than 50 years of military interventions, the US, together with the former Soviet Union, has wearied of its role as global police (wishful thinking!). The consequences of their military actions for their economy, national security and internal ethnic conflicts led to the conclusion to tone down their military campaigns. Consequently, an increasing number of nations are recruiting secret, highly-specialised mercenary units to carry out specific operations. Wars are no longer determined by state armies but instead by small, powerful units of armed soldiers of fortune.

It won't come as much of a surprise to discover that your role within all this as leader of one such Special Forces team. As the Commander, it's your job to lead a small, high-tech army of soldiers, light armoured vehicles, helicopters and VTOLs (Vertical Take Off and Landing planes) in order to fulfil a wide variety of different missions. Your base for the operations is situated on a mobile carrier disguised as a freighter, which subsequently allows for unrestricted travel of the seas and thus enables you to get your forces to each mission destination.

Playing host to the action is a dynamically generated gameworld, complete with day and night cycle and changeable weather, which is based on actual digital satellite data. Each of the game's campaigns and missions is also dynamically created, courtesy of a rather complex diplomatic simulation and as such, every decision made, every assignment accepted or rejected brings with it consequences for the remainder of play.

Throughout the game, you have the ability to gain access to the latest weapon systems and technology, straight from the research centres of the world's weapons industries. These come in especially handy throughout the game's multiplayer mode, which offers an assortment of team-based LAN/Internet games for up to 32 players (or 128 on special servers).
