Summary

The stealth-based shoot-em-up returns once again for PC in Iron Storm, 4X Studios' latest action offering.

This time it's West Germany, 1964 and the last Great War continues to rage on. All you have ever known is the madness of the frontlines and the butchering of men. Wartorn Europe stands ripped apart by a line that runs straight through the heart of Germany where American and Western European troops battle against enemy forces. As Lieutenant James Anderson you must infiltrate and destroy key enemy positions deep behind enemy lines using your sharpened combat skills and stealth where necessary.

Taking place in a variety of European locations, each environment is beautifully rendered, using both night and daytime settings with real-time shadows. It's important that players are immersed in Iron Storm and become involved with the plot. Graphics do this to an extent, but a good narrative and a selection of cutscenes do the job brilliantly.

Starting your game on the Western frontline, Iron Storm prepares you for the missions that lie ahead with a series of training sessions in shooting skills. After that, you're on your own, attacked by the enemy, guided only by allied soldiers. The rest of your journey sees you visiting horrific battlegrounds such as The Russo, Wolfenburg, a science complex and an armoured train.

As you become skilled in the arts of strategy, you will quickly learn that while guns are important, your ability to infiltrate and use stealth tactics is nothing short of essential. Think before you shoot and give careful thought to each decision you make. The wrong choice can easily mean game over, and Iron Storm is less than forgiving.

If this is the shape of things to come from this developer, 4X Studios' next project should be worth a close look.
