Summary
The superstar golfing prodigy is back with this year's instalment of PGA Tour Golf and, in true EA style, it's bigger, better and more realistic than ever before. The premise, unavoidably, remains the same - unleash your clubs and take on Tiger and a host of other PGA pros across a multitude of faithfully rendered real-life courses. As any top golfing coach will tell you, put the ball in the hole - easy!
With regard to the actual environments, there are a total of eight official PGA courses to master - some old, some new - including Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, Princeville, Scottsdale, and Torrey Pines. A comprehensive list of golfing stars is in there to compete either as or against, featuring the likes of Vijay Singh, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, and Mark Calcavecchia, to name but a few (let us not forget the man himself).
A host of new effects have been implemented in this episode, designed to create a more believable experience. For one, the grass actually grows around your feet, making the rough get rougher (sounds like a Billy Ocean song) as time goes by. There's also a realistic weather feature that lets you feel the sun, wind, or even the chill of the fog as it gently rolls in.
The main Career mode offers you the chance to relive the rags-to-riches story of Tiger himself. Starting at the bottom, the task at hand is to hone your skills, grow your golfer, purchase equipment and golf lessons, and embark on a path to the top. It's a long haul though, so expect to give it some serious time and effort.
The list of features in the game is almost endless - too long to fully do justice here. To quickly sum up, we've got a TrueSwing control method, which lets you swing with your mouse, improved commentary, a Caddy Book option that gives you info on your next shot, and a Course Architect for the creation of your own courses. Last but not least, the game features full support for LAN connection and Internet play, so you've got a mass of potential opponents out there.
