Summary

A seemingly innocent trip to a shopping centre takes a macabre twist as Silent Hill 3 - we just knew that the grisly series would come again for a third lunge - creaks and groans its way to the PS2. It's just like we've never been apart…

In a Dawn of the Dead-type scenario, Silent Hill 3 moves away, albeit temporarily, from the gloomy, foreboding atmosphere of SH2 and the misty streets of the original, into a shopping centre. As Heather, the central character new to Silent Hill 3, prepares to leave the complex, the shops are suddenly deserted, and brightly-lit walkways are transformed into a dark, brooding place. Strange noises echo around the supposedly empty corridors. Weird shapes and forms are seen in the blink of a nervous eye as shadows flash by.

So, a carefree trip to the shops has suddenly turned into a living nightmare, and Heather is forced to fight for her life. It's at this point that the familiar hallmarks of Silent Hill come back to haunt the player. Strange shapes in the shadows and darkened corridors? Present and correct. Apparitions and grotesquely deformed creatures lurking in dark corners? Right this way.

Armed with whatever you can find - including pistols, a sub-machine gun and a steel pipe - you must help Heather to fend off their advances whilst trying to solve the mysteries that will piece together why she is trapped in this nightmare world.

Silent Hill 3 should keep fans of the series on the edge of their seats. The famed eerie atmosphere is at its creepiest, and the gruesomely depicted corridors of blood are enough to give you the willies. The combination of audible and visual effects ensure the player's senses have to work overtime.

An unsettling gaming experience, Silent Hill 3 delivers everything you would expect from the franchise, and then some. Not for the easily frightened or the weak of stomach.
