Summary

In an attempt to knock Squaresoft's majestic role-players off top spot and claim the magical crown for their own heads, THQ and developer Volition bring us the sequel to last year's Summoner for PlayStation 2.

In the beginning, players assume the role of goddess reborn and adored-by-all Queen of Halassar, on an under siege ship in the middle of a ferocious storm. You're being invaded, and thrown straight into battle, you must defend your ship against several sword-wielding pirates before disposing of the pirate leader in-waiting.

You have a few enemies, it seems. The king of Galdyr wants you dead and sinister factions are plotting your downfall. And so your summoning adventure begins...

In relation to Final Fantasy, Summoner 2 does bear a great deal of classic RPG traits. Levels, Hit Points, Experience Points, Summons and frequent battle encounters are all in abundance in the Summoner 2 game world. But that's pretty much where the similarities end.

Rendered entirely in 3D, Summoner 2, in visual terms, resembles something along the lines of Soul Reaver or Nightmare Creatures. Enemies appear out of thin air quite frequently and generally make a beeline in your direction. In the early stages of the game, swinging a sword in front of them seems to be the most effective means of survival.

But it's not long before you acquire your first Summon. When you do, you are free to call your inner monster at anytime to sway a battle in your favour. Such creatures are often blessed with great strength and magic abilities, but all have their weaknesses. It's down to you to determine which summon is best for the scenario at hand.

Those are the basics of Summoner 2. Driven forward by an epic tale and good combat system, it's a game that will no doubt rank highly in the RPG hall of fame.
