Summary

Three of the greatest video games to see the light of day on PC have finally been released in a single affordable package, courtesy of software giant Microsoft. Covering a diverse range of genres, the three games, Metal Gear Solid, Crimson Skies and StarLancer are all PC classics that are still highly desirable. Quite right too.

Metal Gear Solid is essentially a tactical espionage game. The aim of the game is to avoid detection while you carry out your missions. A stealth approach is necessary to avoid being seen, and if you’re spotted by the guards or cameras, you’d better run and hide or face the consequences. Luckily, you have a radar that shows you the enemy’s field of vision and direction in which they are looking. You can sneak up behind them, break their necks and drag them off to an inconspicuous location. How you choose to play the game is up to you, but evasion is always the best tactic.

Based around an American War, before the dawn of the Second World War, Crimson Skies looks set to involve the player in a game of intense strategy never before seen in the genre. Throughout the game you will be challenged in locations across the globe, including the landmark locations such as downtown Manhattan, New York. You must learn to control your plane with great accuracy to achieve the best results. To help reach the needs of every individual player, you are given the option to create and customise your very own plane. As long as you keep within the specified prices and weight limits, you can choose frames, engines, and even personalise your plane’s paint scheme.

StarLancer is developed by Erin and Chris Roberts, a duo widely credited as the inventors of the space combat genre with their tremendously popular “Wing Commander” and “Privateer” series of PC games. With such a reputation, you would expect StarLancer to be one of the strongest titles within its genre, and this is the case. Presented with stunning 3D visuals, the realism is so accurate that this space-based title will have you blinking twice. Gameplay is highly complicated, with more than half the keys on the keyboard being allocated to different controls. You will need to spend quite some time getting to grips with the forty-something keys that need to be used for success. But it’s well worth it.

A classic combination then, we’re sure you will agree. Buy. It. Now.
