Summary

Raystorm is the official sequel to Taito’s successful Rayforce. While the backgrounds might have evolved into the 3D realm, the gameplay is still fundamentally 2D. If you like the addictiveness of old school shooters, then RayStorm will appeal to you.

The ship that you choose to take into battle will directly affect your weapon capabilities. Each craft is unique and features different upgrade options, and has two main attacks that can be used to wipe out the never ending invasions of enemy craft. The main blaster can either be a rapid fire laser or a continuous energy stream depending on your choice of craft. Your secondary fire function is the homing missile. Lock on to multiple enemies at once, and then destroy them all in one apocalyptic outburst.

As with most shooters, it is essential that learn how long it takes your shots to reach a certain area of the screen. You must be able to predict the enemy flight path and aim for where they are going to be. Learning the patterns of incoming fighters will help you set up your ship in the most efficient location to wipe them out.

Even thought the backgrounds are nothing more than eye-candy, they still compliment the shooting action. Impressive 3D explosions and twisting levels add to the experience and the difficulty level is about right. Each time you make it that little bit further, as previous mistakes are rectified.

Overall, Raystorm is an enjoyable shoot-em-up, a rarity as the release of this kind of game is seldom seen these days.
