Summary

The renowned, 18-rated kill-fest finally comes to PS2 and, with very much a Hollywood style action-thriller pretence, places the player into the shoes of hired gun John Mullins and requests that a fanatical terrorist organisation be forcefully tracked down and taken out.

Spanning five continents, Soldier of Fortune Gold features 10 covert missions, covering 26 levels, which take in the underworlds of political hotspots around the globe. Stealth, sabotage, assassination and full on, face to face assault are required of the player should he/she wish to stay alive and succeed.

A vast armoury of real-life weapons is available throughout the game, including sniper rifle, grenades, plastic explosives and pulse guns. Their authenticity is accentuated by the developers’ ‘Ghoul’ rendering system, which gives the impression of ‘real’ bullets doing ‘real’ damage. The enemy characters have multiple ‘hit points’ around their bodies so that, depending on where shot, they react accordingly – falling, grasping their wound if shot in the leg, dying immediately if shot in the head.

Aside from the main single player game and the preceding tutorial mode, the PS2 version of SOF Gold features a multi-player mode. With the aid of a multi-tap, up to four players can compete in various different modes, such as Deathmatch.

Like the original PC version and the recent sequel, Soldier of Fortune Gold is most definitely aimed at the more mature audience – it contains an extremely high level of blood, guts and gore and it certainly isn’t for the faint hearted.
