Summary

With an installed user base increasing all the time, UK broadband net connections are finally becoming widespread enough to enable the existence of serious on-line game worlds. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are all anticipating this as the next revolution in gaming and are therefore providing broadband adapters for their respective machines in the near future. For the PC, however, this revolution is happening right now and Neocron is one of the many titles that is testament to this.

This massively multiplayer, first-person role playing adventure - which has already proved very popular since its release earlier this month in Germany - allows players to live virtual lives in a Cyberpunk city, and is the first online role-playing game to portray the action through the eyes of its citizens.

A first person shooter, very similar in style to the great Deus Ex, Neocron houses players in virtual apartments, bestowing upon them the task of earning virtual credits by completing missions. An integral e-mail system allows players to communicate with anyone else living within the world, thus allowing friendships to be made and alliances to be formed.

Neocron itself is one of the three remaining cities on Earth, which emerged from the ruins of World War III. Hope that there is life on another planet meant a mass exodus ensued, leaving behind a world full of citizens, criminals, delinquents and ultimately, corruption.

Players have the choice of partaking in criminal activities, living peacefully, becoming a spy, choosing to be a PSI-Monk with extraordinary powers or even becoming a Tank Warrior. Conflict and combat play a vital role, with players able to join rival factions in order to further political careers. Vehicles such as cars and motorbikes can be purchased, further enhancing the authenticity of the virtual game world.

The release of Neocron is set to spread across Europe and hit the US shortly after. By that time the world will be massively populated and should be a fine example of a multiplayer on-line RPG.
