Summary

Puzzle games and portable consoles are just made for each other. The latest game to deprive you of your precious sleep is Denki Blocks for Game Boy Color.

Developed in simple 2D, Denki Blocks may not be much to look at, but it has plenty of personality. There are lots of cute little characters (although technically meaningless) and a variety of colourful environments that help to make Denki Blocks appeal to a wide audience.

Despite all the attractiveness that comes with Denki Blocks, the game itself is like a vicious monster from your worst nightmares. Once you’re within its grasp, it hooks you and doesn’t let go.

The premise of the game is simple. You begin with a board of scattered blocks that must be joined together into a single mass. Once complete, you can move onto the next stage of the game. Blocks can be manipulated into different positions on the board through the use of ‘blocker’ cubes, a feature that initially seems useful. But soon after, what was once useful soon causes problems. The addition of different coloured blocks and a more complex playing area only makes things harder. And while Denki Blocks can often be frustrating, it can also be exhilarating. Once you’ve mastered the mechanics of the game, your aim is to complete the levels as quick as possible and in the fewest possible moves.

Ingenious and addictive, in Game Boy land, no one can hear you scream as Denki Blocks! takes over your life.
