Summary

Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader? He-Man or Skeletor? Autobots or Decepticons? Those school playground games were always fraught with such difficult decisions. Do you defend the freedom of the rebel alliance? Or are you more susceptible to the temptations of the dark side? Or do you just be Boba Fett because he can fly and he looks cool? Regardless, making the choice between good and evil is never quite so simple.

The latest game to pose such a dilemma is Nintendo's Doshin the Giant. Big, lanky, yellow, friendly giant or big, lanky, red, evil giant. It's a tough one.

Set on a picturesque tropical island, the game casts players as friendly, gentle love-giant, Doshin. The job at hand is to help the island's inhabitants build and maintain their settlements, which will eventually house monuments, devoted to the worshipping of our giant, god-like hero. Using his big, long arms and superhero strength, Doshin can perform feats such as raising and lowering the land to give the islanders space to build, and wrenching up trees with which they can build houses and temples. Each good deed rewards players with hearts, which increase the big fella's size, as well as earning a greater following of the little people.

Now here's where the fun begins. At any point in the game, pressing a button will cause Doshin to morph into his evil, red alter-ego, Jashin. Rather unsurprisingly, Jashin does things a little differently. With powerful fists and the ability to breathe fire, he can lay waste to the islanders' hard work, leaving behind him a wake of destruction and mayhem. This devil-like disregard for human life also reaps its rewards, in the form of skulls, which, like Doshin's hearts, have an impact of the behemoth's size and power.

Love-giant or hate-giant - the choice is yours. The preference is left only to your conscience in the quest to collect the 16 different monuments, achieved by fostering many different settlements across the land.

Go on, do something wicked. No, actually, be nice. No, erm, hang on...
