Summary

Well known for a number of franchises, not least Mortal Kombat, Midway has a significant knowledge of the American sport of basketball. Releasing games such as NBA Hang Time, the company is now broadening its publishing portfolio with NBA Hoopz for PlayStation. Currently dubbed as the only 3-on-3 dedicated basketball game, NBA Hoopz offers something new to an increasingly popular genre.

As one of the later games to arrive on the six-year-old machine, the visual prowess of this game is more than adequate. Featuring highly detailed textures, over 500 animations have been incorporated into NBA Hoopz to add an increased sense of realism. This is demonstrated well in the form of animated crowds and player models.

As a basketball game, of which there are many, NBA Hoopz boasts the latest official team statistics and player rosters. After choosing from a plethora of American teams, you can participate in what is an extremely intense game of basketball. For hardcore players, season and tournament modes of play are available, in which you can customise the length of a game. The most ardent of fans can set the game up to play a full season of 82 games. Progressing through the game is challenging, but can be rewarded with hidden bonuses such as beachside courts and street courts. Players handle extremely well, and where other games can often be confusing due to the great number of polygonal players, NBA Hoopz manages to avoid a complex environment.

All in all, NBA Hoopz is easy to learn but somewhat difficult to master when played on a high difficulty setting, but it’s appealing to both casual and hardcore players of the sport. It’s a great game.
