Summary
A racing game staring Sonic the Hedgehog makes sense when you think about it. The first thing everyone noticed about the first incarnation of Sonic was the awesome speed at which it moved. It would be fair to say that at the time of its release, Sonic the Hedgehog was the fastest game ever, moving along at a rate previously thought unimaginable. Even the Gamegear version was LCD blurringly quick.
Sonic R first emerged as a Saturn title back in 1997 and was received well by critics and punters alike. It runs (if you can pardon the pun) along the same lines as Codemaster’s Micro Maniacs with the playable racers legging it around a series of tracks. All the sentient characters from the Sonic series have been included by Sega, in very much the same was as Nintendo did with Super Mario Kart. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Robitnik and the rest can all be seen jostling for position.
The PC version of Sonic R looks really good, far better than the 3D deficient Saturn. The draw distance is very deep with the background scenery and track detail merging well.
There are three main game modes for you to enjoy. The first and most enjoyable in one player mode is Grand Prix. This pitches every character in a race all at the same time. As with every Sonic game, you pick up rings as you travel around the level which give you a buffer against any mishap. There are also the standard Sonic Power-ups to collect such as speed sneakers and invincibility. There is also a time attack mode to allow you brush up on your skills when tackling a specific track.
The fun really starts when you have a friend or four to play with. Sonic R’s multiplayer mode supports up to four players simultaneously and is as good a laugh as Mario Kart. No mean feat We’re sure you will agree
