Summary

The karting genre was originally made one of the most popular and accessible racing genres with the release of Nintendo’s Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Ever since, hordes of Mario Kart clones have been developed across several old-generation and next-generation platforms. Well now there’s another one and it’s based on Nickelodeon’s infamous cartoon characters. Yes, it’s Nicktoons Racing on PlayStation.

Targeted at a young audience, Nicktoons Racing features 13 karting animations that consist of classic TV characters such as CatDog, the Angry Beavers and the Rugrats. As you progress through your hi-octane adventure you will race on as many as 16 tracks, spanning a variety of colourful environments. The tracks themselves are varied; some are wide, some are narrow and some are complex, but all have been designed to offer an enjoyable challenge. Naturally, further tracks can be unlocked through winning races, increasing the longevity of the game.

There are five game modes to participate in, including Adventure, Time Trial and the highly enjoyable multi-player game. To spice things up a little, there are a variety of devious power ups to be obtained and used to your advantage.

As a game designed for kids, Nicktoons Racing is stunning, but it is also a great game that appeals to many adults in the same way that Mario Kart did. Nicktoons Racing provides a good balance of karting fun that many developers before them have failed to achieve.
