The UEFA Champions League is where all thoughts of light training during the week and then putting in a token effort on matchday have to be put aside. Just because your team’s star player has a contract worth thousands more than the average Joe Footballer doesn’t mean he can merely turn up and collect his pay check. No, this gathering of Europe’s elite football teams is all about going to the very top of the tree with no lame excuses for failure. Every team in the real UEFA Champions League is there by merit, and this new version for the PlayStation, brought to us by Take 2 and Silicon Dreams, certainly deserves to be up there challenging for top honours.

The teams found in this game will be familiar to football fans the world over, big names such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid rubbing shoulders with relative neophytes Olympiakos and Sturm Graz. Whichever team you decide to take charge of, and once familiar with the simple controls, you’ll find yourself plunged, literally, into the big league. If you think you’re going to be able to score at will, like you can in some other footy titles, you’re in for a big shock. You can guarantee that, as in the real world, the opposition will have done their homework to repel anything you throw at them.

You could be forgiven for thinking that there’s not a great difference between this year’s version and its predecessors. Forgiven because you’d be right to think so. That doesn’t make it a bad game – if you’re looking for a challenging footy title, then this, along with Konami’s ISS titles, is it – it’s just a case of repeating what’s gone before. Previous owners need not re-buy.
