Summary

Madden is back once again and this time the game is better than ever. You have to Admire Electronic Arts for all of the refinements that they make to their sports titles every year. Do you remember when Madden NFL debuted on the Mega Drive? Things have come a long way since those days. All of Madden's great playability combined with full 3D graphics.

The presentation of Madden 2001 is top class, the menu system is easy to navigate and it will take you no time to jump into the game. The soundtrack is urban hip-hop and it adds a modern feel to the title.

There are so many game modes to choose from in this latest incarnation of Madden. You can pick an exhibition game where you choose any two teams plus any stadium and dive straight into the action. Alternatively, you can opt for a full season of play where your aim is to make it all the way to the championship. Additionally, there are two-minute drills, practice, situation, tournaments, and franchise modes.

Madden plays like a dream, full stop. There is no other American Football game on the PlayStation that feels so good to play. Calling plays is intuitive and easy, and it will take you very little time to get used to it. The pace of the action is fast and there can be some truly tense moments. Knowing that you have to win the game to make it to the playoffs and being a few points down with precious seconds left is nerve racking.

One great feature of Madden is the card challenges. There are several challenges that involve you meeting certain criteria depending on the difficulty setting. These could be running a return of certain length or making a specific play. If you complete all of the requirements, you will be rewarded.

A lot of time has been spent on the player animations. Sacking the quarterback or scoring a touchdown results in little dances and catchphrases. These touches bring the game to life and make it more enjoyable. American Football is a highly competitive sport and so is Madden 2001, the computer puts up an excellent challenge.
