Summary

Namco began its hay day in the late seventies and early eighties in the arcade division with a number of A-list releases that included the infamous Pac Man. More importantly, Galaga, released in 1981 was a classic among many arcade space-based shoot-em-ups released around the same time. After moving onto home computers and consoles, Hasbro Interactive saw fit to get Namco’s permission to release a brand new Galaga game for the millennium, and so Destination Earth was unveiled. Set exactly two hundred years into the future, 2181, Earth is once again about to embark upon its final battle against the Galaga race. You, and only you are challenged to destroy the persistent race once and for all.

This new edition of the Namco classic is now rendered in full 3D, but at the same time it manages to retain the gameplay that made the game what it is. However, soon after beginning a game, you will uncover a further two points of view that differ gameplay considerably. As well as the traditional top-down scrolling game, there is a side-on scrolling perspective similar to R-Type, and an over-the-shoulder point of view reminiscent to Nintendo classic, Starfox. Classic features remain intact, meaning you still have capability to enhance firepower through the capturing of enemy craft. New collectibles and power ups have also been added, enhancing the game considerably. There are now a variety of attack waves that now include mission and boss modes of play. Once again, to hold your position at the top of leader board you must replay Galaga over and over until you are familiar with the attack patterns of the enemy. Your hit accuracy bares a great influence on your overall score.

Cleverly, Destination Earth combines classic gameplay with all-new features, making it instantly appealing to both casual and retro gamers alike. A great update.
